Multilingual English

It's been a long time since Mr. Udi held an offline class, but in this meeting finally the class offline again. In this meeting we focus on critical speaking, where we discussed its definition and concept. Each student was asked to come forward and write a word related to critical speaking. From the discussion, we can concluded that critical speaking involves clear, analytical, and rational communication, and open-minded. After the discussion, we practiced critical speaking through an impromptu speech. Each of us had to choose a spontaneous topic and present it in front of the class. In addition to this, we were given an assignment to interview English teachers about their views on multilingual English. We were also required to read related journals and compare them with the results from the interviews. For the interview assignment, we worked in group and focused on interviewing three English teachers about multilingual English. We started by reaching out to teachers and arranging ...

Digital Literacy in English Education

After reading the document, this study explores the importance of digital literacy in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs, particularly for international students preparing for university. It highlights how digital literacy helps students adapt to academic practices, such as using plagiarism detection tools and managing online course content. The writers compared students who completed an EAP program with digital literacy components to those who did not, showing that the former group faced fewer challenges and had a better understanding of academic integrity and digital tools. The writers emphasize that traditional language skills alone are insufficient for success in modern academic environments. Integrating digital literacy into EAP programs equips students with necessary skills, such as critical use of information, effective communication in digital platforms, and adherence to academic conventions. The study also reveals that students who undergo such training perform bette...

Developing Critical Speaking Skills in English

After reading the document, it explains how critical thinking helps students improve their speaking skills, especially in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). Critical thinking means analyzing, questioning, and evaluating information, which is important for good communication. The writers say students should practice speaking activities that involve critical thinking to speak English fluently. Activities like discussions and debates can help learners express their ideas clearly and confidently. It also suggests practical ways teachers can encourage critical thinking in the classroom. For example, students can watch TED Talks, join group discussions, or use the KWL method (Know, Want to know, Learned). These activities help students reflect on what they learn, consider different viewpoints, and improve their speaking skills. The writers highlight that teaching critical thinking not only helps students speak better but also prepares them for real-life communication challenges. I...

Lecturer and Student's Perception towards Al as an Educational Supporting Tool

During our third meeting, we were assigned an independent study project. Our task was to form groups consisting of five members and interview lecturers or students from the English Department Untirta about the use of AI in English teaching. The deadline for completing the task was one week. The goal was to explore their opinions on AI, its benefits and challenges, and how it supports the learning process.  This week, we started by designing questions for the interviews. The questions were meant to gather detailed information on the topic. Then, my group made questions to ask and decided to interview our classmates, two seniors, and a junior that we met in our way to our class (what a great coincidence). Then the interviews began with recorded, after that the we make the transcripts for our group report.

The Impact of Multilingualism on Personal Identity Development

In the next meeting on, we gave impromptu speeches on the topic of "THE IMPACT OF MULTILINGUALISM ON PERSONAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT." There are more than 5 students (i think? I forgot) including me, shared their thoughts on what multilingualism is, its benefits, and their personal experiences. They explained that being multilingual means speaking more than one language, which helps us communicate easily with foreigners, open our perspective, and helps us make more friends while embracing different cultures. The purpose of the exercise was to help us overcome our fear and nervousness when speaking in public, at first i was so worried not being able to speak in front of my friend and especiallyin front of Mr. Udi, but i managed it by encouraging my self that if they can do it, so do i.  After the impromptu speeches, we had a group discussion. So for the first, Mr. Udi asked us to create 3-5 questions about multilingualism. Once we finished, then we discussed and answered the que...

Introduction to Mr. Udi's Critical Speaking Class

On August 26, 2024 , during the first meeting of our English speaking class, Mr. Udi introduced the course as a "zero class academic speaking" session. He shared his background and asked each of us to introduce ourselves, mentioning our names, where we’re from, and our expectations for the class. The class mainly focuses on speaking in English, where we are expected to think and speak in English before class. Mr. Udi explained that 70% of the class would be offline, and we would need to engage in critical thinking, analyzing topics, and sharing opinions. He also explained that we would be assessed through presentations, peer reviews, and panel discussions. Throughout the session, Mr. Udi emphasized the importance of speaking only in English during class. At first, I was nervous about speaking, especially in front of others, but I quickly realized that with practice, I could do it. In his class, there are no midterms or final exams in this class, but we are expected to partici...
